“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
So declares The United States Declaration of Independence. It’s clear that the framers believed in a Creator who endowed all men with such unalienable rights. For those who believe in and fear our Father in heaven, the pursuit of happiness would appear to be a good and reasonable right.
What happens when we no longer believe in a Creator—as has now already taken place in mainstream American culture and in the “Christian” West as a whole?
When we no longer acknowledge that there is a God above who is holy, just, and righteous, then the term “happiness” is corrupted. The meaning of happiness is no longer tempered by an acknowledgement of a holy God who will demand an accounting for the life and deeds of every person who has lived.
We in America are no longer ruled by a holy God but—by default—by our human nature, a nature which is inherently sinful. That nature demands that we do whatever makes our flesh feel good and “happy.” That among many other things would include sinful sexual behaviors between men and women out of wedlock, between men and men, and between women and women, and more. Often the consequences of such behavior between men and women are unwanted pregnancies. The extreme fervor for unlimited abortion by progressive liberals is the natural outcome.
But since there is no holy God in heaven who will demand an accounting from us for what we have done on earth, why not?
Since mainstream America no longer acknowledges and fears a holy Creator, “the pursuit of happiness” in our Declaration of Independence has given birth to progressive liberalism which grants us the “freedom” to do almost whatever our flesh desires. Such freedom is in reality license to indulge our sinful nature. Contrast that with freedom according to Scripture—which is actually freedom from sin.
Sadly, given our human nature such an outcome is inevitable in “Christian” nations which have integrated “Christianity” into their cultures. Many who consider themselves “Christian” in such countries were simply born in “Christian” families and are not followers of Jesus Christ. Those who are truly born-again followers of Christ are instead to consider themselves “strangers” on earth, and not “Christians” by virtue of simply being born in America.
Apart from God there is no real freedom.
